Blues is a 3YO sweet sweet Pitbull who came to us because he had stopped eating, icteric (his eyes and skin were turning yellow), vomiting, and having diarrhea.
His owner had lost his job and housing during the pandemic and was desperately looking for an affordable clinic that could help him and Blues. Blues was given to him as a gift when he was a puppy and he has a very strong bond with Blues.
Our clinic was slammed busy that day, but we couldn’t turn Blues away. Our staff wanted to help Blues and we were able to fit Blues in as a walk in urgent care appointment. We ran diagnostics during that appointment.
Dr. Tracy warned Blues’ owner that he had a guarded prognosis, but his owner was not ready to say goodbye. Our staff provided supportive care and we sent Blues home with supportive care and medications for possible leptospirosis.
Blues came back 2 days later for additional support with fluids under the skin and the owner reports that he's doing very well. He has regained his appetite, his vomiting has resolved, his stools are now normal, and his yellow skin and eyes are now resolving. The lepto test is still pending, but this is a great example of our practice of tiered medicine and meeting the owner where he needed to be met.
His owner was very thankful and expressed how appreciative he was. He is the nicest, best client and Blues is so lucky to have him.
The videos are of us administrating subcutaneous fluids in a fear free way (using treats as a distraction) and Blues owner explaining to Dr. Lauren that he was afraid of pitbulls when he received the Blues as a gift, but he’s been educating himself on training and body language and has come to realize that pitbulls are the most loyal, loving, goofy dogs.
We’re so happy we could help Blues and his owner and this is what Vets in Vans is all about!
Thank you staff for helping Blues despite our very crazy busy schedule!
